I have finally finished the book I am reading, K-9 Korea, which is about a dog regiment at the end and after the Korean War. At the end of the book, many of the men just went back to their normal lives back in the military, however some got in trouble for trying to escape the army. stealing things from the USA (guns, their dog, etc.) and a few got married and had kids. You may be asking yourself, "so what?". I think that this book is important because many people in the USA today are worried North Korea firing nuclear bombs over to the USA, thus starting WWIII. Plus, many men lost their lives during this war and we should never forget their lives, as said in the book, "the men agreed that their time in Korea had affected their entire lives." I would say that this book matters because it has a full link to the ties in North Korea currently. I would say that the takeaway from that book is that some friendships are forever, but some will not. I say this because the men in the book became great friends with each other, but in the end, the dogs had to be transported to somewhere else when the men left Korea. I think that this is still valuable today because some friendships might last a long time, like with siblings, but some might not last forever, like your middle school friend who is going to a different high school, but no matter who we meet in our life, we must never forget our past.

Modern Day Korea has to do a lot with the book I am reading K-9 Korea. Currently in the book, they just arrived to South Korea to help fight the war. Just like in real life, many troops have to protect the South Korean border against the Dictatorship of North Korea. North Korea is currently under the Dictator of Kim Jong Un, who threatens to send over nuclear bombs and blow up the USA. Nobody is sure if North Korea will send over nukes, but many are frightened. In the book, The USA is fighting against North Korea to stop communism, but now a days, North Korea is a dictatorship. At the end of the Korean War, it ended up as a stalemate with both putting up walls and having their guns pointing at each other and hoping the enemy doesn't fire. And that is how these to conflicts relate to each other.
Right now I am reading a book called K-9 Korea, which is about different war dogs that helped fought in The Korean War. Currently in the book, North Korea has decided to invade South Korea, causing war to break out. This causes Many of the troops to ship out to Korea with their dogs to help fight the war. This also connected in time when North Korea actually invaded South Korea to spread communism. As said in softschools.com, "It began when communist North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950." In my book, the people of the USA were really worried and had to act swift before North Korea took over all of Korea. The same thing happened in real life. As soon as the government found out about the invasion, the USA sent over troops so they could stop North Korea from getting any more ground. Just like in the book, most of the soldiers had dogs to help them during the war. I think that anyone who is a dog person should read this book, because so far, it is a good book.
This is a paper that I wrote with James (JC) Fentress about homeless animals. To see JC's website, Click Here.
Homeless Animals By: J.C. Fentress and Kennan K. Mottershead Introduction Many animals in Wake County don't have a place they can call home and because of that they are forced to stay at the shelters. Those animals are not receiving the love they deserve and animal shelters are forced to put those animals down. In fact, one shelter in N.C. is killing 99% of the animals they receive because are only allowed to keep the animals for 72 hours before they must be euthanized. Not only does this affect the animals, but it also affects the shelters that hold the animals. It’s very expensive to keep the animals for a certain amount of time, but it’s also expensive to put them down. Many animals in Wake County don't have a place they can call home and because of that they are forced to stay at the shelters. Currently, there are too many homeless animals in Raleigh, N.C. and our group wants to reduce the amount of them and find them a home. I believe that this issue is very important to our community. Although I am allergic to cats and dogs, I love almost every animal. I want to make sure that animals that don’t have a home can have one and that they will have someone they can call a friend. You should definitely be interested in this issue because shelters are having to euthanize innocent animals that can be easily saved by people like you. Animals that do not even live in shelters may wonder into the street and get hit a car, or bite someone and give them a disease. I also think that you should be interested in this issue because it is always good to have a pet that you can go on walks with and give them tummy rubs. The Issue This issue not only affecting the animals and shelters, but it’s also affecting you. Peta.org says, “Instead they (the animals) are cruelly killed by people who don’t want them, are dumped on roadsides and left to die from starvation or being hit by a car, or spend their short lives homeless, unwanted, and producing more litters of animals for whom no homes exist.” Last year nearly 225,000 dogs were euthanized. This issue is also affecting other citizens in Raleigh. Homeless animals have been around in our community for decades. One of the causes of homeless animals is overpopulation. About 3 million animals are born every hour in the US, which means shelters don't have enough space to keep the animals in there. Another thing that causes homeless animals is lack of commitment. People are adopting animals for the wrong reasons and dumping them on the streets. Owners also don’t have them spayed or neutered so they keep reproducing and owners can't afford to keep them. Hundreds of people in North Carolina are affected by homeless animals. Many stray dogs and cats carry diseases and could possibly attack you. They are reckless and not careful due to lack of training. They can run out into the streets and get hit by a car or bus. If homeless animals aren’t taken care of then they will roam the streets and attack people, be euthanized by animal shelters, or hit by cars and busses. In our community others have helped by volunteering at the Wake Animal Shelter. Another way they have helped is by adopting animals from the shelter. Other organizations such as the SPCA are helping the animals by having food drives for them, but it's still not enough. There are too many animals to take care of and too little volunteers to help them. The animals need more attention and more help too keep them happy. Other ways people are helping is by having food drives for the animals, volunteering at the shelters, and adopting pets. Pet Food Pantry, a local pet organization, has been holding pet food drives for the animals. The Wake Animal Shelter has volunteer hours for everyday citizens. Also people like you can adopt a pet from a local shelter and save them from being euthanized by the shelters. Conclusion There are many ways that you can help in homeless animals in your community. One way to help is by going around town, looking for animals that don't have a leash on and bring them to an adoption center to make sure a good owner will find them. But what I think is the best way to get the message out, is at the Variety show at the end of the school year because that is when all of the school is at the same place and at the same time. We could tell the school that we want to collect 1,200 dollars by the end of the school year so we can donate it to shelters. If there was a problem, it would most likely be that we do not get enough money by the end of the school year. You, as a student, would need to know that you are required to go to the Variety show and how much money the shelters need. Another way that you could help is by helping out at an adoption center by feeding the animals or doing as little as making sure that they go out on a walk. The best way that you can help is by adopting an animal that fits you best. If you adopt, you are saving your new pet from most likely dying and it will get the love it needs. Although it does cost money, it is worth it to have a good friend and save a life. Citations Wral. "NC Shelter Kills 99 Percent of Animals, Records Show." WRAL.com. N.p., 15 Nov. 2012. The Blue Ridge Parkway has brought joy to many people's lives by showing them how amazing Mt. Mitchell and Looking Glass Falls can be here in NC. However, in the last two years, the budget has been cut in half, causing many people to not enjoy this place to the fullest. ⅔ of the land are currently vulnerable to logging and the other ⅓ might be vulnerable soon. This issue is very important to NC because it has been around for about 75 years and it should stay so that many people can go on a trip to the mountains. I personally want this parkway to be saved because I really like to hike, especially with my boy scout troop. I think that you should care about this issue because it’s important to keep nature alive before we destroy it. Some ways you could help bring back the budget is by sending a letter to the governor or taking a hike on the Blue Ridge Parkway. What are some ways that you can help prevent the destruction of this parkway? If you have one, list it below.
Sources from http://www.environmentnorthcarolina.org/programs/nce/save-blue-ridge-parkway In today's time, there are many issues in N.C., however, one of those issues are the food deserts across the state. Many places that are either majorly underpopulated or overpopulated, don't have a store where they can get healthy foods and are forced to eat at unhealthy places. I am interested in this issue because many people are not able to eat healthy and it is always important to stay healthy and eat healthy. Many people in downtown Raleigh are affected by this because they don’t have any transportation to get to good grocery stores such as Harris Teeter or Whole Foods. This is important to you because you may live in a food desert, next to one, or have a relative that is in one and it's always good to help out in your community. If you want to help out with people that live in these areas, go to a Food Drive, or participate in Stop Hunger Now, or go to a Food Bank. It doesn't matter how you help, but it is important for everyone that you do help. What do you think you should do to help with food deserts in your community? Do you have a plan to help out in your community? If so, what is it?
